Product Idea

After a week of watching Cape Epic videos from Specialized I think I can now safely say that I would like to produce a series of motivational, self help tapes featuring Benno Willeit. There’s something about his voice that if he told me to jump off of a bridge I probably would.

You are sleeping, you do not want to believe.
You are sleeping, you do not want to believe.
You are sleeping, you do not want to believe.
You are sleeping, you do not want to believe.

Just sayin’.

It’s Morning Somewhere, Right?

The 3 p.m. coffee break has become a staple here at XXC HQ. By 3 p.m. the three mugs I had in the morning have long worn off and I need that LITTLE kick in the chamois bits to get me to “quittin’ time” and in the saddle. I tried a 3 p.m. scotch and soda… that didn’t work so well.

A Lot of Bread

Earlier today I was looking at cranks online. One model was a hoochie $620 elite level race crank with a weight of 629 grams. The other was the same company’s $285 mid level race crank that weighed 740 grams.

I got to wondering what that 111 grams might look like. I figured if I could see and feel 111 grams in my hand I would have a better idea of whether it would be worth the extra $335 to hooch it up.

Turns out if you take two and a half pieces of whole wheat bread and nibble one corner like a mouse it comes to 111 grams.

I then stood there in my kitchen looking and feeling like an idiot, holding the bread in my hands wondering if that .58¢ worth of bread was worth $335 worth of crank or not.

I found one of those hoochie cranks on close out a few years ago and I like it a lot, but after much deliberation, making a sandwich and wondering what I can do with a half of a piece of bread with a nibble taken out of it, I decided that for me– right now– it is not. I mean $335 is a LOT of bread.

2013 Ultra-Endurance Tour “Schedule”

USA Cycling recently announced the 2013 Ultra-Endurance Tour schedule.

5.19 US Cup Sagebrush Safari 50, Lake Morena, CA
6.2  US Cup Big Bear Classic, Big Bear Lake, CA
8.10 Galena Grinder Whit Henry Memorial, Galena Lodge, ID
8.17 Templeton Cache XCM, Colorado Springs, CO

Nothing against the races that are part of the UET schedule, but given the sheer amount of endurance races throughout the U.S. (check the XXC Race Calendar if you don’t believe me) four races doesn’t seem like much of a tour. It’s also sort of hard for the UET to be considered a “national” series when there isn’t one race further east than Colorado Springs, Colorado. Maybe a Western States Ultra Endurance Tour or some such thing, but hardly a national series.

Tinker_JuarezGiven the schedule’s bias towards the west coast, barring injury, right now I really can’t see how now Cannondale/Sho Air teammates Tinker Juarez and Pua Mata won’t win the series again. But you never know, stranger things have happened I suppose.

In any event that’s the schedule, if you’re from the east coast and can afford the travel good luck to you.

XXC Holiday Gifty Bits: XXC Magazine

Yep, you knew sooner or later I had to do a shameless plug for the magazine. Print versions of the magazine are available at MagCloud.com and I can assure you that if you have a friend, companion, husband, wife, enemy, buddy, mate, lover, hater, boyfriend, girlfriend, partner, etc., etc., who digs endurance mountain bike racing and all day adventures in the dirt (and sometimes snow) you should pick up a copy or ten for them, they will love you. I highly recommend the 2012 editions (issues 15 – 17)… perfect bound spine*, heavier paper, minimal advertising (as always, that’s sort of why the mag’s in the mess it is), photos and stories from racers around the world. Plus the more people the see XXC the more people who will say “DAYYYYUMM we need a magazine like this to keep going or the world as we know it will be the worse for it!!” Ha! I am fooling around of course, but not completely…. I do think they will dig the mag though and will want to hold onto it and not throw it away like an old People or a stack of used porn.

Visit MagCloud.com to order print mags [HERE] or you can always visit the xxcxmag.com store to order a T shirt or some stickers for stocking stuffers! Nothing says “Happy holidays!” like an XXC “Fun Hurts” bumper sticker.

OK, I promise that is my last shameless plug for the year.

*NOTE: Many other issue of XXC Magazine are also perfect bound and will say to the left when you click on the mag along with size and page count. Some are also noted with the term Deluxe.)
