X100 Update

Recently John from the X100 checked in with xxcmag.com to let us know what is going on as the race approaches on August 24th in Traverse City, Michigan.

As of now the X100 is expecting 150 and 200 racers by race day, with the majority of the entries being individual 100 mile racers. John also reports that the gravel road sections are sandy and bumpy and that some good rains could really help out with low pressure being key for most racers.

On the other hand, he report that the single track west of Kalkaska is fast and flowing before racers hit a section of trail they are calling The Hangover. With it’s diverse terrain, scenery and vegetation the race should be really cool. The X100 told us that they are hoping racers will finish and say “Wow! That was hard and felt like a travelled a million miles.”  (or at least 100) Right now the course is 95% ready, with the exception of a few small connectors due to logging. Conditions have been pretty dry, so about 1/3 of it is rough, sandy and bumpy; but the rest of it is beautiful riding though canopies trees and great scenery.

There is still time left to register so click, register and race.

Now at the midpoint of the race season, The Kenda NUE Series moves west from the ancient volcano’s that formed the Black Hills of South Dakota at the Tatanka 100 to the volcanos of the fifth annual High Cascades 100 in Bend, Oregon on Saturday, July 20th.

Top level racers are gathering to compete along a single loop that includes some of the best single track Oregon has to offer. Temperatures are expected to reach 91 degrees by late afternoon on Saturday. However, racers will be at altitude, which is about seven degrees cooler according to Race Director, Mike Ripley. Low humidity also contributes to more comfortable conditions, welcoming to riders from the Midwest that are enduring a heat wave this week.

Bend is firmly ensconced at 4000ft above sea level but the race will launch riders to a high point of 6800 feet with one stretch of sixty-five miles of continuous single track that includes a scenic trip around Mt. Bachelor along trails littered with lava rock from mile 55 to mile 80. The event has a maximum cap of 350 riders and has brought in close to $20,000 for the local Trail Group, COTA. Race winners will be competing for a $3000 cash purse for top placing overall men and women with equal cash to the top three.

Wolfgang Krenn (Team Zwillingscraft/Sc Knauf Liezen) will be one of the riders to beat at this year’s Genco Mongolia Bike Challenge presented by Orbea. Reigning Champion, Cory Wallace, is familiar with the young Austrian’s skills, having met him previously at the Crocodile Trophy: “Wolfgang is a very tactical and strong rider so he will be up there in the lead group every day and will be tough to shake.” Krenn has a wealth of stage racing and marathon MTB experience, including winning the Salzkammergut Trophy in 2011, coming second at the Crocodile Trophy in 2011, and a very strong showing at the Cape Epic this year. We spoke with Krenn about his expectations and preparation for MBC 2013.
