European Mountain Bike Championships

Frenchman Julien Absalon took the victory and his second European title by almost two minutes over Nino Schurter of Switzerland. Absalon and Schurter were together most of the race until the fifth lap when Absalon attacked on a steep climb leaving Schurter behind to battle Marco Fontana out for the silver medal.
Post race Nino Schurter had this to say– “Absalon was the best rider today. He was in his own league today but I am thankful for the silver medal, the atmosphere around the track was fantastic.“
By “atmosphere” Schurter was surely referring to the 15,000 spectators that were on hand for the event. An impressive number of folks for any race let alone an XC mountain bike race.
Marco Fontana of Italy took third on the day and spoke to event reporters after the race:

In the Women’s race Tanja Zakelj (SLO) fresh off of her win at XCO No. 3 in Val di Sole, Italy took the gold medal by 38 seconds over Eva Lechner of Italy. Our favorite Polish mountain bike racer Maja Wloszczowska was able to hold off Katerina Nash (CZE) by just over 20 seconds to secure the bronze medal
